Your TS 7.3L Chip Isn't Working? Check your Cleanliness!!!

October 30, 2025

You just finished installing your TS Performance 6 Position Chip on your 7.3L Powerstroke...

You turn the key, expecting that classic diesel rumble - but instead... nothing. Before you panic, or think your chip is defective, let's talk about the most common culprit... it's. not. clean. enough.

What's the J-Port and Why It Matters

The J-Port is the electrical contact area on your truck's ECM where your TS Chip connects. Those small metal pads are how your chip communicates with your engine's computer. If there's EVEN a layer of coating, oxidation, or residue left on the contacts, the chip can't make a clean connection - and your truck won't start or won't recognize the tune positons.

The #1 Installation Mistake: "It Looks Clean Enough"

This is where most people get tripped up. The J-Port may look clean at first glance, but the factory coating on the ECM pads is stubborn. If even one pad has remaining film, the chip's signal is interrupted.

Common signs your J-Port isn't clean enough:

  • Truck cranks but won't fire
  • No response when switching postions
  • Error codes or check engine light
  • Feels like the chip "isn't doing anything"

Don't worry -- your chip is almost never the issue. The ECM more than likely just needs a better connection.

Dirty vs Clean: See the Difference:

 Not Clean Enough Properly Cleaned
Visual

Dull, cloudy coating, dark residue on contacts

Bright, shiny copper pads across entire contract strip
Result

No communication or poor signal to the chip

Solid electrical connection, perfect communication

How to Clean the J-Port Correctly

Time to get cleaning. Take your time here - this step determines how well your chip performs.

  1. ⚠️Disconnect both batteries!! The #1 reason why customers fry their computers is because they did not disconnect their batteries. ⚠️
  2. Remove your ECM carefully from the kick panel
  3. Locate the J-Port where the chip plugs in
  4. Scrape gently using the supplied Scotch-Brite Pad (included with chip package)
  5. Remove every bit of coating until you see clean, shiny metal
  6. Wipe away residue
  7. Inspect under bright light - every pad should gleam like a new penny

🔔Take your time and clean evenly to avoid damaging the contacts

Reinstall and Fire It Up

Once your J-Port is fully clean, reinstall the ECM, plug in the chip, reconnect the batteries, and start your truck. You should notice smooth idle and full switch functionality. If it starts and runs like it should - congratulations, you just fixed the #1 issue with 7.3L chip installs!

Final Thoughts

At TS Performance, we've seen it countless times - customers think something's wrong with their chip when it's really just a cleaning issue. We can send you a 100 chips and they will all do same thing, it won't work if it is not clean enough. Taking an extra 10-15 minutes to clean your J-Port thoroughly ensures your chip runs flawlessly and delivers the power you expect. Check your cleanliness.
