Buying a used 7.3L Powerstroke with a TS Performance chip already installed—or picking one up second-hand from a friend—can be a great deal. But if the truck isn’t running the way it should, the switch does nothing, or the chip feels “dead,” you’re not alone. This FAQ covers the most common questions we get from customers who purchased a used TS 6-Position Chip and are trying to figure out what to do next.
Every TS 6-Position Chip must be programmed specifically to your truck’s PCM code.
If the previous owner had the chip tuned for a different PCM code, the tunes will not match your truck—and the chip will act like it isn’t working at all.
Common signs of a mismatched program:
No change between switch positions
Truck runs the same in all modes
The truck runs poorly, surges, or won’t start
The check engine light appears after install
Solution: You’ll need to have the chip reprogrammed to your truck’s PCM code to get the correct tunes. TS Performance can help you with that with a $200 Reprogramming Fee.
Your PCM code will be located on the Powertrain Control Module behind the driver-side kick panel. It’s a 3–4 letter code (ex: PMT, MDP, VDH).
Once you have the code, you’ll know exactly which tunes your truck needs.

A used TS 6-Position Chip can be reprogrammed, even if it came from a different truck. Many customers do this after buying a used 7.3 or picking up a chip secondhand.
To reprogram the chip, visit the Warranty, Returns, & Service Link to fill out the form you’ll send the chip in with. Once it has been delivered back to our shop here at 26 Corporate Court, Bowling Green, KY, contact us that it has been delivered and we will reflash your chip or see what the issue is wrong with it.
If the truck already had the chip installed when you bought it, the issue may be:
A faulty or broken switch
A dirty J-Port (installation tab not cleaned properly)
The chip is not fully seated in the PCM
Quick checks:
Make sure the switch cable is firmly plugged in
Ensure the chip is pushed completely into the PCM connector
Inspect the chip edge for dirt, corrosion, or scratched contacts
Verify that the previous owner didn’t modify the switch wiring
If the switch itself is damaged, TS Performance offers a Switch Service Kit and Switch Replacement options.
Absolutely—this is one of the most common reasons a used chip won’t function correctly.
The PCM’s J-Port must be cleaned down to bare copper before installation.
Old sealant, dust, corrosion, or leftover coating can prevent the chip from making contact.
A poor connection = no tunes.
If you’re unsure whether your chip was installed properly, removing it and performing a proper cleaning often resolves the issue.

If the chip worked at first and then stopped responding, you might have:
A loose chip
A weak switch cable
Moisture inside the PCM area
A failing PCM
A damaged chip from prior installation issues
A quick reseating and inspection usually solves this.
If not, our tech team can evaluate the chip to determine if it needs repair or reprogramming.
